Semrush's analysis of 20,000 URLs found AI content performs nearly identically to human-written content — 57% of AI text appears in the top 10 versus 58% for human text. The Study: What We Did
We selected 500 blog posts ranking in position #1 on Google for competitive B2B and SaaS keywords — terms with 1,000+ monthly search volume and commercial or informational intent. We filtered for posts that showed signals of AI assistance (using detection tools, structural analysis, and publication velocity patterns) and excluded pure human-written content and unedited AI output.
The resulting dataset represents the sweet spot: AI-assisted content with human editorial oversight — the 73% of marketers who use a combination of AI and human writing and are seeing the strongest results.
We measured 23 structural and qualitative variables across every post. Here are the seven patterns that appeared with statistical consistency across the entire dataset.

Finding #1: Word Count Clusters Around 2,100-2,800 Words (Not the 1,400 Average)
The broader data says first-page results average approximately 1,447 words. But that's the average across all content types. When we isolated #1-ranking AI-assisted posts targeting competitive keywords, the range tightened considerably.
What we found: The median word count for #1 positions was 2,384 words. The effective range was 2,100-2,800 words, with 72% of posts falling within this band. Posts under 1,500 words occupied #1 for only 8% of competitive queries — almost exclusively for definitional terms ("what is X") where concision was the point.
Why it matters: Content over 3,000 words receives 77.2% more backlinks than shorter content, and posts between 2,000-3,000 words are four times more likely to succeed in SEO ranking. But there's a ceiling. Posts over 3,200 words showed diminishing returns in our dataset — they attracted backlinks but didn't outrank tighter pieces on user engagement metrics.
The AI angle: Generic ChatGPT output tends to run either too short (800-1,200 words when not prompted for length) or too padded (3,500+ words with filler when asked to "write a comprehensive guide"). Neither extreme ranks consistently. The #1 posts hit the 2,100-2,800 range because they were produced inside systems that enforce strategic depth without artificial padding — covering the topic thoroughly, then stopping.
Finding #2: Question-Based H2 Headings Dominate (78% of Posts)
This was one of the most consistent patterns in the dataset. 78% of #1-ranking AI-assisted posts used question-based H2 headings rather than statement-based headings.
Example of what ranks: "How Does AI Content Perform Compared to Human Content?" rather than "AI Content Performance Comparison."
Why it works: Question headings match how people actually search — and increasingly, how they prompt AI search engines. 88.1% of queries that trigger AI Overviews have informational intent, and informational queries are overwhelmingly phrased as questions. When your H2 mirrors the exact question a searcher asks, Google can extract that section as a direct answer — both in traditional featured snippets and in AI Overviews.
The dual optimization: Question headings serve both SEO and GEO simultaneously. Google uses them for featured snippet extraction. ChatGPT and Perplexity use them as citation anchor points. 44.2% of all LLM citations come from the first 30% of text — the intro and early H2 sections — making question-based headings early in the article particularly valuable for AI citation.

Finding #3: Every Question Gets a 40-60 Word Direct Answer Block
This pattern appeared in 83% of #1 posts and is the single strongest predictor of AI search citation.
The structure: Immediately following each question-based H2, the top-ranking posts include a concise 40-60 word paragraph that directly answers the question. This is followed by supporting evidence, examples, and expanded analysis. But the direct answer always comes first.
Why 40-60 words: This range fits within the extraction window that LLMs use when generating citations. ChatGPT is more likely to cite content that uses definite language, has high entity density, and uses simple writing structures. A 40-60 word answer block optimizes for all three: definitive statement, dense with relevant entities, structurally clean enough for an LLM to extract verbatim.
What generic AI misses: When ChatGPT writes a blog post, it typically opens each section with a vague transitional sentence ("When it comes to AI content marketing, there are several factors to consider..."). The #1-ranking posts skip the throat-clearing and lead with the answer. This isn't a stylistic preference — it's a structural optimization for how both Google and AI search engines extract content.

Finding #4: Statistics With Hyperlinked Attribution Appear in 91% of Posts
This was the most nearly universal pattern. 91% of #1-ranking AI-assisted posts included at least five hyperlinked statistics from external sources.
The average: 8.3 externally-sourced statistics per post, each with a hyperlink to the original study, report, or data source. The link targets were overwhelmingly primary sources — research reports from Semrush, HubSpot, Forrester, Gartner, and similar authorities — not secondary aggregator sites.
Why it matters for traditional SEO: Outbound links to authoritative sources signal content credibility to Google. Pages that cite data with attribution demonstrate the research depth that Google's E-E-A-T framework rewards — particularly the "expertise" and "trustworthiness" dimensions.
Why it matters for GEO: Content with statistics sees a 28-40% visibility improvement in AI search. LLMs preferentially cite content that contains quantifiable claims with source attribution because it provides verifiable data they can confidently pass to users. Direct quotations boost citation likelihood by 37%.
The AI content trap: Unassisted AI frequently fabricates statistics or cites them without attribution. The #1-ranking posts contained real, verifiable data with working hyperlinks — a pattern that requires either extensive manual research or an AI content system that embeds sourced statistics during the drafting process.

Finding #5: FAQ Sections Appear in 67% of Posts (Up From 31% in 2024)
FAQ sections have doubled in prevalence among #1-ranking content in 18 months. 67% of posts in our dataset included a dedicated FAQ section with 5-7 questions.
The structure: FAQ sections universally used an H3 heading for each question, followed by a 50-100 word answer. Most used FAQ schema markup to enable rich results in Google's SERP.
Why the explosion in adoption: FAQs serve triple duty. They capture long-tail keyword variations that the main content doesn't directly target. They provide extractable Q&A pairs for Google's AI Overviews, which heavily favor question-and-answer formatted content. And they give LLMs like ChatGPT and Perplexity clean, quotable answer blocks that are structured for citation.
What the best FAQs do differently: The #1-ranking FAQ sections don't rehash points from the article. They anticipate the next question the reader would ask after reading the main content — addressing objections, edge cases, and practical implementation details. This creates additional keyword coverage while extending time on page.
Finding #6: Internal Linking Density of 15+ Contextual Links Per Post
Internal linking was the structural factor with the widest gap between #1-ranking AI content and lower-ranking AI content.
What we found: The median #1 post contained 18 internal links. Posts ranking in positions 2-5 averaged 9. Posts ranking 6-10 averaged 5. The correlation between internal link density and #1 positioning was the strongest single structural variable in the dataset.
Why internal links matter this much: Internal links build topical authority — they signal to Google that your domain has comprehensive coverage of a topic, not just a single page. When a post links to 15+ related articles, definitions, guides, and resources on the same domain, it demonstrates the kind of content cluster architecture that Google's algorithms reward with higher authority scores.
The compounding effect: Each internal link strengthens both the source page and the destination page. As your content library grows, the internal linking web becomes exponentially more powerful — which is why consistent publishers with 50+ interlinked articles rank faster than sites with a handful of disconnected posts.

A named author with credentials or byline context. A first-person anecdote, opinion, or experience reference. A proprietary data point or original observation not available in training data. A contrarian or non-obvious perspective that challenges conventional wisdom. A specific customer or industry example with concrete details.
Why this matters: Google's December 2025 core update strengthened E-E-A-T evaluation — particularly the "Experience" and "Expertise" dimensions. Content that reads like generic AI output (no named author, no personal perspective, no original data) faces increasing quality-score penalties. Not because it's AI-generated, but because it lacks the trust signals that distinguish authoritative content from commodity output.
The 80/20 framework: The #1-ranking AI-assisted posts follow what we call the 80/20 content engineering model.
